Today my family and I visited a dear elderly family member who is becoming more and more frail by the day from the effects of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease as it is commonly called. While on the way to her home, I felt the Lord wanted me to talk to her about Him once again. I didn’t know what I would say and knew better than to try to come up with the right words ahead of time. I would let the Holy Spirit lead me. And, He did. As we were admiring the beautiful wild flowers in her garden, I commented on God’s handiwork and went on to conjecture about the wonders that await us in heaven. I also told her how very sorry I was for what she was going through with the ALS. By God’s grace I managed to understand her garbled response, that she felt she’d lived long life and had always been very healthy so it was okay to have this now. I didn’t exactly agree with this, but I assured her that those who put their faith in Jesus Christ alone would be with Him in heaven where this is no more illness or pain or sadness. I clearly presented the truth of salvation being through Christ alone, not our good deeds or own measurement of decency. She assured me that she understood this, and I will keep praying that her faith is indeed genuine. I will continue steadfast in my effort to sow the Good News, praying it falls upon good soil, so that others may know the love, sacrifice and free gift of our Good Shepherd.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever should believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
